Runway Sinkhole Disrupting Operations At NAS Jacksonville

Sewer Line Failure Caused Damage, No Health Hazards, Officials Say

The failure of a sewer line under the main runway at Naval Air Station Jacksonville, FL caused the Navy to close a portion of the runway until it can be repaired.

Television station WJXT reports that the hole is about 15 feet long, five feet wide, and three feet deep. Some sewage spilled due to the failure, however officials say that there is no health hazard associated with the spill.

But flight operations have been affected. Some limited flight operations are being allowed on the unaffected portion of the runway, but some flights have been diverted to Cecil Airport and other facilities for aircraft that require more than 6,000 feet of pavement.

The sinkhole was discovered during a routine runway inspection at the base Tuesday morning. No estimate was given by the base for a timeline for repairs.
