Aero-News Featured Aero-Casts: Flying Into Oshkosh

Tales Of Dealing With 'The Busiest Control Tower In The World'

This week, we're featuring one of our first-ever Aero-Casts -- where we sent our Oshkosh "rookie" Rob Finfrock up to the North 40 to interview pilots who had literally just cut the mixture on their engines, after flying into Wittman Field the Sunday before AirVenture 2005 officially got underway.

The pilots expressed excitement and relief at finally being on the ground at Oshkosh, as well as universal admiration and support for the job the controllers performed. If you've never flown into Oshkosh during an AirVenture, or watched the experience from the ground, it's hard to visualize... imagine a large swarm of bees, though, and you'd be close.

Pilots flying into Wittman literally put their lives in the controllers' hands for the final fifteen minutes or so they were in the air, right up until the time they parked... and during that time, it seemed as if they could almost reach out and touch the other aircraft around them.

Except they weren't looking at the other planes, but instead were focusing their eyes at exactly where the controller was telling them to.

"Cleared to land, green dot..."

"Listen to me, blue Bellanca, don't watch the Cessna..."

"Slow it down, Baron! I know you can go slower... you're about to run over the Cub ahead of you!"
