Classic Aero-TV: AirVenture Hideaway - Chuck Swain’s Beer Coffin

A True ANN Classic From 2009 (YouTube Version): Chuck Swain’s Unique Gathering, a “Bier” of “Beer”

Each year, over 40,000 EAA AirVenture attendees opt to enjoy the event from the cozy campgrounds of Camp Scholler.

Located adjacent to the EAA Convention grounds, the 140-acres pack with living arrangements of all sizes, from tents to large RVs. The site transforms into an “Aviation City,” as EAA has nicknamed it, equipped with shower facilities, food services, and even two general stores.

What community, however, would be complete without a proper watering hole?

Chuck Swain, or “Reverend Chuck Swain,” as the AirVenture crowds know him, has provided a truly incomparable solution for over 40 years.

Originally started as a retreat for the customers of his company, Beaver Aviation, the aptly named, “Beer Coffin” has become one of Camp Scholler’s most notorious attractions. It is the place to socialize with AirVenture visitors, to talk about the day’s happenings, and, most importantly, to cultivate friendships with fellow aviation enthusiasts.

It is no wonder that Chuck Swain looks upon the experience as a sacred gathering at AirVenture.  For new attendees, it is truly a rite of passage.

Just make sure you know the daily offering of fellowship:

“Our lager, which art in barrels, hallowed be thy drink. Thy will be drunk. I will be drunk, at home as in the tavern. Give us this day, our foamy head, and forgive us our spillages, as we forgive those who spill against us. Lead us not into incarceration but deliver us from hangovers; for thine is the beer, and the bitter and the lager, forever and ever.

Bar-men!”
