Kansas State Teens Summer Camp Opens Registration

Grades 9-12 Offered 4-Day Student Pilot Experience, Flights, Training

Those teens looking to jump-start their aviation career have another summertime option to begin filling out their logbook at the Kansas State summer flight program.

The Fly K-State Academy is a 4-day aviation course that takes young students through the first steps of flight training, netting 3 hours of dual time throughout the week. Students will begin with all the hits and classics of student pilot training, moving from pre-flight inspection, take off & landing, and traffic pattern basics in their first block of instruction before taking to the air and trying out their skills in actual flight conditions. Then, it's on to basic flight maneuvers, basic (simulated) instrument flight, and a quintessential "hundred dollar burger" at the Stearman Field restaurant at the end of a 1.5 hour cross country flight from the program's home at Salina Regional airport.

The summer program takes advantage of the school's fleet of aircraft and FTD equipment, allowing students to have the same experience as college freshmen in an abbreviated, introductory course. The program accepts students entering 9th to 12th grade, and includes all necessary program supplies and instruction, transportation from activities, university student pilot attire, and evening programming. Most importantly for any young pilot, they get their first time logged, with 3 hours of flight time and 1 hour of sim. The camp runs from June 13 to 16, and runs $1,400.
