Drone Security Issues To Be Focus Of Two-Part Educational Session At DWE

UAS Experts From Major League Baseball, Department Of Justice, Department Of Energy And California Highway Patrol To Speak

Drone technology has advanced rapidly over the last decade and has become a valuable tool for many industries on a global scale. With commercial and hobbyist drones filling the skies, policymakers have increasingly expressed security concerns.  Drone World Expo will feature two powerful panels focused on security, both of which are comprised of an impressive list of stakeholders who will share their insights.  The sessions are scheduled during Drone World Expo taking place October 3-4, 2017, at the San Jose Convention Center.   The Commercial Drone Alliance is a long-standing association partner of Drone World Expo and has been instrumental in developing these panels.

"2017 has been the "Year of Drone Security" for the commercial drone industry.  Remote Identification and Counter Measures for Unmanned Aircraft are two exceedingly important topics for this growing industry," said Lisa Ellman, Global UAS Practice Chair, Hogan Lovells; Co-Executive Director, Commercial Drone Alliance and Drone World Expo Advisory Board member.  "As public agencies craft laws and rules around drone security, engagement on these issues now between government and industry is critical to enhance understanding and mutual collaboration.  I'm excited for these discussions at Drone World Expo."

On Tuesday, October 3rd at 11:45 am Marke "Hoot" Gibson, the FAA's Senior Advisor on UAS Integration, will moderate a panel on "Counter Measures for Unmanned Aircraft."  Panelists will address how law enforcement can mitigate potential threats; how drone policy evolves to allow counter-drone efforts to operate; and how industry can contribute to the federal government policy conversation around domestic drone security. Join industry and government representatives to talk about counter-drone technologies and policies, and how industry can innovate in a way that helps to keep businesses and the public secure.

Speakers will include:

  • Neil Boland, Chief Information Security Officer, Major League Baseball
  • Dr. Gerald Curry, Deputy Associate Under Secretary for Security, U.S. Department of Energy
  • Lisa Ellman, Global UAS Practice Chair, Hogan Lovells; Co-Executive Director, Commercial Drone Alliance
  • Brendan Groves, Counsel to the Deputy Attorney General, U.S. Department of Justice
  • Daniel Magy, Founder, Citadel Defense Co.
  • Craig Marcinkowski, Director, Strategy and Business Development, Gryphon Sensors
  • On Wednesday, October 4th at 11:45 am, Lisa Ellman will moderate a panel discussion on Remote Identification for Unmanned Aircraft.  The FAA recently convened an Aviation Rulemaking Committee to help the agency create standards for remotely identifying and tracking drone operations. Join law enforcement and industry representatives to discuss legal, policy and technology issues around remote identification - and what a business needs to know in this evolving regulatory landscape.  Speakers include:
  • Brendan Groves, Counsel to the Deputy Attorney General, U.S. Department of Justice
  • Travis Mason, VP of Public Policy and Government Affairs, Airbus A³
  • Christian Ramsey, President, uAvionix Corporation
  • Michael Sedam, Lieutenant, Commander, California Highway Patrol, Office of Air Operations

In addition, there will be more than 40 educational sessions focused on a variety of important commercial drone topics.  Drone World Expo will also have unique and keynote panels each morning of the event that begin at 8:30 am.   On Tuesday, experts from Airbus Aerial, Facebook, GE Beyond, NASA, and Project Wing/X will address "Views from Above: Policy Evolution and Bold Predictions for the Future of Commercial UAS."  On Wednesday morning, experts from Aurora Flight Sciences, NASA, Uber Elevate, Ford Motor Company and UPS will address "From Packages to Passengers: How Drones Are Transforming Transportation."
