Flying Cloud Airport Cleared For Longer Runways

Hopes To Attract More Bizjet Traffic

A Minnesota airport has received approval from the FAA to expand its runways, in hopes of attracting more corporate traffic.

According to the Minneapolis-St. Paul Business Journal, construction will begin August 1 on runway 10L/28R at Flying Cloud Airport (FCM) in Eden Prairie. Work on the south parallel runway will start next spring, said Patrick Hogan, Metropolitan Airports Commission spokesman.

Both runway renovations are part of a $20 million project to improve accommodations for corporate jets. The plan calls for the longest runway to grow from 3,900 to 5,000 feet in length, to allow planes to operate from the airport with higher fuel and/or passenger loads.

"The companies that use it right now can't use it efficiently," Hogan said.

Officials will open bidding for the construction project later this month. MAC will initially fund the project from its own coffers, though it hopes to attract federal aid, as well.

Last year, Flying Cloud experienced 117,492 takeoffs and landings, according to the MAC web site.
