Extended Video Of Asiana Airlines 777 Accident Released

Shows Evacuation Did Not Begin Until 90 Seconds After Plane Came To A Stop And Caught Fire

An extended version captured from the tower at San Francisco International Airport (KSFO) of the 2013 accident involving an Asiana Airlines 777 has been posted to YouTube.

In the video, the plane can be seen clipping the sea wall on its approach to the airport, and then skidding along the runway. But about 90 seconds elapse after the plane comes to a stop before the emergency slides deploy and people begin to evacuate the airplane. Black smoke can be seen coming from the right side of the aircraft.

The NTSB said in its docket on the accident that the delay was due to the pilot telling the crew to wait, as well as "disorientation and confusion." The NTSB said that the crew acted properly in delaying the evacuation waiting for information from outside the plane.

MSN reports that the video was first posted to YouTube by an unidentified user. A spokesman for KSFO verified that it is authentic. "The footage illustrates the rapid response of airport and first responders, the quick knockdown of initial and secondary fires, and the integration of mutual aid support," said spokesman Charles Shuler.
