AAL Laying Off 1,000

450 Of Them Are Pilots

American Airlines will lay off a thousand workers in the next few months. Reuters reports 450 of them will be pilots. More cuts appear to be on the way.

That word came from AAL CEO Gerald Arpey Wednesday. He cited the remarkable spike in the price of fuel as one of the major reasons for the layoffs. American will pay almost $500 million more in fuel charges in the fourth quarter than it did during the same period a year ago.

The move was not unexpected. In issuing another disappointing quarterly financial statement last month, the airline warned that it would have to wield the job-cutting axe.

"We will see more cuts across the board, all workers, in the months ahead," Arpey said. "Were it not for Exxon getting most of our money this year, we would have been able to make some progress."
