Airports to See Reinforced Fencing, Runway Cleaning to Weather the Elements
The Canadian government is investing half a million into the aeronautical ecosystem in Norther Ontario, enhancing safety with improvements to grounds and equipment.
The funding will be issued under Transport Canada's Airports Capital Assistance Program, issuing $382,500 to the Moosonee Airport and $163,625 to the Greater Sudbury Airport. Moosonee will put their money towards a new grader, which will prove exceedingly useful while they control snow and ice buildup along movement areas during the harsh winter months. Greater Sudbury will replace its wildlife control fencing, preventing runway incursions caused by deer, coyotes, foxes, and bears.
The Capital Assistance Program has already worked with both airports in the past, with 2022 granting $1.2 million to Moosonee Airport. They installed wildlife control fencing of their own, purchased a new runway friction tester, and a runway sweeper. Greater Sudbury saw the infusion of $3 million, which went to a similar runway sweeper after revamping 2 taxiways and a runway.
"Canada's airports keep our communities connected. They create good, middle-class jobs, and they strengthen our economy. Investments in our local and regional airports will help us build safer and stronger communities from coast-to-coast-to-coast,” said Minister of Transport Pablo Rodriguez.
"The Moosonee and Greater Sudbury airports are important hubs for residents and businesses in Northern Ontario,” said Marc G. Serré, parliament member for the Nickel Belt. “They connect us with family and friends, help us discover new destinations, and are pivotal trade corridors for many businesses in this region. This funding will enhance safety for travelers, air crews and airport workers, while supporting jobs and our regional economy."
