Tom Turner's Aero-Craft 101: Transitioning To A New Aircraft

One of the most exciting times for any pilot is when you get checked out on a new aircraft. Whether you're going from nosewheel to tailwheel, fixed-gear to retract, piston engine to turbine, or simply from a carbureted engine to one with fuel injection (or, if you're really lucky, FADEC) -- there are a multitude of new procedures to learn, and become familiar with. Gone are the days a pilot could brag about being able to "fly anything with wings" right from the start.

Receiving training and endorsement on the aircraft is, of course, mandatory; once that rating is in their logbooks, however, many pilots forget such basics as reviewing the POH, checklists, and V-speeds when they fly that new airplane. And can you find the major controls in that new airplane when blindfolded?

So... what's the difference between being legally able to fly a different type of aircraft... and being able to fly it safely? A lot, says ANN Contributor Tom Turner in today's Aero-Craft 101.

• ANN's Daily 'ASR' Feature Aero-Cast: ANN will be offering a Daily 'Aero-News Special Report.' This involves a more in-depth view of a story or two that dominated (or will be dominating) the day's news. Far more detailed than any single story in our standard ANN Daily Reports, this is a solid chance to get a close look at the stories and topics that matter. ASR features may include exclusive interviews with Aviation's Newsmakers, ANN's Special Investigative reports and solid analysis of the stories that will have undeniable impact on the world of aviation and aerospace. We're tremendously excited about this particular product in that it truly adds nuance and background to important breaking news stories and personalities.
