GAMA Gives a Standing Ovation to General Aviation

Study Determines That GA Generates $339 Bil and Supports 1.3 Mil Jobs

The General Aviation Manufacturers Association (GAMA) is giving the general aviation community a big pat on the back with its new study, revealing that the sector supports more than 1.3 million jobs and generates $339.2 billion for the US economy.

The research was sponsored under a partnership between eight pioneering general aviation organizations, including GAMA, AEA, AOPA, EAA, NASAO, NATA, NBAA, and VAI.

Through direct activity, supply chain cooperation, income spending, and travel expenses, general aviation was found to contribute $339.2 billion in total economic output. The study also noted that 214,000 GA aircraft, ranging from homebuilts to business jets, took flight in 2023 and logged 28.6 million hours.

GA upholds 1,330,200 direct jobs, with each indirectly fueling approximately 2.6 more. California topped the scales with the most general aviation jobs, opening 146,600 employment opportunities for a $39.8 billion economic impact.

“We are proud to report that despite challenges that have plagued the entire aerospace industry since the beginning of the pandemic, the segment of the U.S. economy affected by general aviation grew over 150,000 jobs and an additional $92 billion in annual economic impact since last reported in 2020,” expressed Pete Bunce, GAMA President and CEO.

While the sector is crucial for countless reasons, GA’s life-saving impact has recently been showcased in a big way. Aerial operations were crucial in the Palisades Fire response, with hundreds of air tankers being deployed to drop water and fire retardant.

General aviation aircraft are also essential in disaster relief. After Hurricanes Helene and Milton swept the East Coast, volunteer pilots came to the rescue to evacuate people from flooded areas, deliver medical supplies and food to isolated communities, and even transport blood or tissue.

“Those of us who are involved in general aviation see its contributions, vitality, and importance every day, but this information showcases this remarkable segment of our nation’s economy for everyone,” explained Jack Pelton, CEO of the Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA). “General aviation is not only about economic growth, it is also about supporting communities and individuals as a unique element of personal freedom in America.”
