FAA Establishes Walrus Haul-Out TFR In Alaska

Restriction Is In Effect 'Until Further Notice'

Anyone think that the proliferation of TFRs is out of control? Here's ANOTHER case in point... Some time ago, the FAA has dropped an indefinite TFR over a portion of Point Lay, Alaska for "walrus haul-out protection." The TFR went into effect at August 20th and will remain in place "until further notice."

The area under the TFR is an elongated triangle starting at about the Point Lay airport and stretching just north of east along the south bank of a barrier island in the Bering Sea. It rises to an altitude of 3,000 feet MSL.

According to an article published September 14th in the LA Times, the walruses, an endangered species, have gathered by the thousands on the barrier island for four of the last several years. Some attribute their activity to the effects of climate change, and say that the massive "haul-out" at Point Lay is unusual behavior for the animals. They normally spend the summer months on sea ice in much deeper water.
