Lockheed Martin Reveals Exceptional C-130J Performance Results

Wing Structure Testing Exceeded Expectations, Extends Service Life

Lockheed Martin announced the results of wing structure testing that far exceeded expectations and validated the extended wing life of the C-130J Super Hercules and the structural superiority of its center wing box.

Several years of testing revealed that the modified Enhanced Service Life (ESL) center wing box incorporated into C-130J production aircraft beginning in 2009, has proven to offer nearly 40% more lifespan over initial estimates, and nearly twice the specification design life.

Results demonstrated extension of the wing’s service life from an estimated 90,000 Equivalent Flight Hours to an expected 122,500 Equivalent Flight Hours. This reinforces the C-130J’s place as the most capable and reliable tactical airlifter in the world and also confirms its durability in challenging operational environments.

Rod McLean, Vice President and General Manager of the Air Mobility & Maritime Missions at Lockheed Martin Aeronautics said, "With this groundbreaking test result, we're redefining the boundaries of what's possible for the C-130J Super Hercules.

“Already proven in challenging operational environments, the structural durability test validated the C-130J as the standard for exceptional reliability, safety and excellence in any environment. It is built to deliver performance and built to last."

The testing program was initiated a funded by the U.S. Air Force and the Royal Canadian Air Force. It simulated the stresses and strains of real-world flying conditions to push the wing to its limits.

The Air Force provided a C-130 ESL center wing, two outer wings, and a center fuselage for the Wing Durability Test, which after several years of testing yielded the results confirming the C-130J wing life to be an unprecedented 122,500 Equivalent Flight Hours. These findings will potentially extend the lifespan of the Super Herc by decades.
