EAA Museum Presents Space Day October 7

Features Apollo Space Exhibit, Hands-On Activities, Expert Presentations

From actual equipment used on Apollo space missions to hands-on fun activities showing the physics of space flight, the EAA Aviation Museum will be “Mission Control” for its annual Space Day on Saturday, October 7. All Space Day activities are included with regular museum admission.

The Space Discovery for Kids experiences will be available from 10 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. It includes the popular “Houston, We Have an Omelet” space capsule-building activity, construction of straw and fizzy rockets, space-themed flight simulators, and a full-size replica of a Mercury project space capsule.

The EAA Aviation Museum’s Apollo space exhibit on loan from the NASA Glenn Research Center features clothing worn by astronauts on missions to the moon, equipment that they used, and one of the largest moon rocks brought to Earth by the Apollo 15 crew.

In addition, the complete video from the Apollo astronaut reunion at EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2017 will play in the museum’s Skyscape Theater, as seven astronauts and flight director Gene Kranz recall the days of Apollo and project where space flight might go next. At 2 p.m., EAA’s Chris Henry will highlight the space program’s history and achievements.

The day’s keynote presentation is at 5 p.m., when Dr. Jennifer Levasseur, curator of space history at the National Air and Space Museum, will explore the past achievements and the future possibilities of manned space flight.

As part of the special Space Day activities on October 7, lunch will be available for purchase at the museum from 11 a.m.-2 p.m.
