Washington State Pilot Sets Unofficial Fuel Efficiency Record

Flight Was From Harvey Field (S43) In Snohomish, WA, To Pendleton, OR And Back

An 84-year-old pilot from Washington State has set what appears to be a new record for airplane fuel efficiency during a flight from Harvey Field (S43) in Snohomish, WA, to Spokane, WA and on to Pendleton, OR, and back. The flight took place Friday.

The pilot was Arnold Ebneter, a retire Air Force Colonel. During his flight, which is pending official certification, Ebneter used just 62 pounds of fuel, giving him an unofficial 55 miles per gallon in his experimental E-1 airplane. The previous record was 67 pounds. The Snohomish Times reports that if the record is certified, that would make the E-1, which Ebneter designed and built himself, the world's most fuel efficient airplane for its weight (under 1,100 pounds) in the experimental category.

Ebneter's previous experience as a Boeing engineer may have also given him some insight into efficient airplane designs. He has logged over 20,200 hours as PIC, and is an FAA Designated Pilot Examiner as well as a helicopter instructor.
