Boeing Plans Washington State Layoffs In May

Notice Sent To Workers Warning Of Staff Reductions

Boeing has sent a 60 day notice to workers at its Washington State factories that "involuntary layoffs" have been scheduled for May.

CNN Money reports that a person familiar with the notices said that the latest round of layoffs will affect about 500 people.

Boeing is reportedly adjusting its staffing levels to offset lost revenue and offer better prices to customers, as well as improve profit margins. The company has reduced its employment levels by about nine percent in the past year, according to the report.

The move has been prompted by a slower pace of orders for both the 777 and Dreamliner aircraft, according to the report. The company is cutting production of the 777 by nearly 60 percent from its highest level.

Boeing has been cutting staff since early last year, mostly through buyouts and attrition of executive, manager and engineering staff. This is the first notices from the company that some factory workers will be idled.
