NASA Orders More Shuttle Inspections

But Officials Are Confident Of July's Return To Flight

NASA wants more inspections on the landing gear doors of the space shuttle Discovery Monday after finding defects there on the shuttle Atlantis.

"We don't see this as a schedule impact," said NASA spokesman Kyle Herring, quoted by Reuters.

Discovery was already on its way back to the Vehicle Assembly Building to be fitted with new boosters and a new external fuel tank, after engineers voiced concerns about icing and glitches in a fuel test earlier this month. The new tank will include a partly-built heater to resolve the icing issues. The heater will be completely installed back on the pad.

NASA officials Monday decided to delay Discovery's return to the VAB so they could get a better look at the landing gear doors. A crack was found in the right gear doors on Atlantis. Officials at the Kennedy Space Center said they had a spare in stock and would install it if necessary.
