Air Inuit Pilots Update Passengers On Negotiations

The Air Line Pilots Association, Int’l (ALPA) represents the pilots of Air Inuit, who have recently entered a “conciliation” process with the airline to reach a collective bargaining agreement.

The pilots of Air Inuit released the open letter below in both English and French, and is addressed to the Nunavik and other communities of the Far North in Canada:

“On June 30, 2025, Air Inuit pilots officially entered a conciliation process in the hopes of reaching a new collective agreement. Our goal is simple, yet essential: to strengthen the stability of air service in the region and provide Inuit communities with the reliability they deserve.

“Air Inuit is much more than just a carrier, and as pilots, we are fully aware of the responsibility that this implies. That is why we are calling on the employer to take concrete steps to retain experienced pilots who ensure the continuity of this service.

“Unfortunately, negotiations have been slow. As a precaution, we have begun discussions to determine, if needed, which services might be deemed essential under Canadian law in the event we’re unable to reach an agreement.

“Our current working conditions lag behind the rest of the aviation industry, which undermines our ability to retain qualified pilots. Flying in the far north requires a unique set of skills. The environment is demanding, characterized by extreme weather, limited infrastructure, and inconsistent ground support. It is not a place for trial-and-error training—it is a region where experience makes all the difference.

“Nearly half of Air Inuit's current pilots are newly trained. This concerning figure reflects a turnover rate that poses a threat to the service's stability.

“We are not asking for special privileges. We are seeking concrete measures to help Air Inuit compete more effectively, retain its experienced pilots, and, most importantly, continue serving Nunavik with reliability and dedication.

“We want to reassure you that, even in times of uncertainty, your well-being remains our top priority. If negotiations fail, we will do everything in our power to minimize disruptions. But we believe that what we are asking for is also in your best interest.
