Iraq Airways Resumes International Service After 14 Year Hiatus

At first glance, there was nothing special about the Iraqi Airways Boeing 737 as it took off from Amman, Jordan, headed for Baghdad and then on to Damascus, Syria. But for a country ruled by a madman for nigh unto 30 years and an airline that hadn't flown internationally in 14 years, it was a milestone event.

There wasn't a lot of information available about Flight IA164, not even confirmation that there were any passengers aboard. It wasn't on the tote boards at Amman Airport. The ticket counter knew nothing about it.

While that would be a logical extension of security fears surrounding the still-volatile Baghdad airport, the airline's deputy director put on a brave face when questioned by Reuters.

"We're not scared," Isaac Esho told the wire service. "Our aircraft will take the same security risk as all the others, probably much less."
