Gone West: Pegge Soucy ... AKA 'Ma Blatz'

Had Endless Ties To The Aviation Community

Pegge (Margaret Dorsey) Soucy (aka “Ma Blatz”) passed away in her Florida home on January 23rd, 8 days shy of her 91st birthday. Pegge, originally of Taunton, MA, and later Louisville, KY, was the widow of L. Paul Soucy, and both were very active in the Airshow and Aerobatic Communities.

Pegge was the mother of Aerobatic and Airshow Legend Gene Soucy, EAA’s Ford Tri-Motor and Airline pilot Colin Soucy, and former ATC manager and pilot Cheryl Soucy.

During high school—which she missed quite a bit of while recovering from an inverted-pass crash when riding with a friend in an Argo biplane—and WWII, Pegge was a lookout for German subs in Cape Cod Canal. She actually spotted one ... which didn’t make it into the canal.

Pegge was a lifelong pilot. She soloed at age 16 in a Piper Cub loaned to her by William T. Piper himself. She maintained her flying status well into her 80’s. An IAC’er and a Lifetime member of the OX-5 Club, Pegge was an EAA Lifetime member and decades long Volunteer, also well into her 80’s. Fun-loving and fiercely independent, “Ma Blatz” was a well-known fixture at airshows around the country; usually driving herself hundreds of miles and bringing 12-packs for all. She will be missed.
