U.S. House Votes To Reopen FAA Registry

Rep. Mike Pompeo (R-KS) Accuses Administration Of "Going Out Of Its Way To Cause Pain" For Americans

The U.S. House of Representatives on Wednesday passed H.J.Res. 90, the Flight Safety Act, which would fund the FAA and open the Aircraft Registry Office.

“The House is continuing to act to blunt the impact of Democrats’ government shutdown, passing legislation today to fund the FAA and ensure that flight safety remains a top priority," Speaker of the House John Boehner said in a statement. "None of these stopgap measures would be necessary if the President and Senate Democrats would come to the table and work with Republicans to re-open government, address America’s mounting debt, and protect all Americans from the train wreck of a health care law.

"It’s what the American people expect from their leaders, and the least Senate Democrats can do is pass these bipartisan measures in the interim so Americans are not needlessly hurt by their political gamesmanship.”

Kansas Republican Congressman Mike Pompeo spoke from the House Floor in favor of the bill.

“It troubles me that the administration is once again going out of its way to cause pain for the American people and at great risk to America’s safety. We see this up close and personal in my district with this incomprehensible closure of the FAA registry office," Pompeo (pictured, standing) said.

“This is the office that allows airplanes to be transferred, to be sold and bought and purchased, and entered into service. In previous shutdowns this office was deemed essential, it was kept open, and for good reason. It’s the equivalent to the DMV for aircraft—you have to keep this pipeline moving, it’s important for safety and for workers. It’s affecting thousands of families all across the country who build planes, engineers and workers and manufacturers and sheet metal benders especially in the 4th District the Air Capital of the World—you know, thousands of families many of whom are hardworking union families that folks across the aisle tell me they care deeply about. I know that I do too.

“I would urge these folks on the other side of the aisle to recognize the importance to our labor force, to keep America safe, to get the aircraft registry back open, and to pass this piece legislation today.”

The Library of Congress website indicates that the resolution passed the Republican-controlled House 227 - 186. The bill's future in the Senate, controlled by Democrats, is uncertain.
