Airborne 06.10.19: ‘Doc’ Returns, D-Day Vet Jumps Again, World View

Also: Optionally Piloted BlackHawk, Airport Infrastructure Grants, EAA Names Connolly, Airbus Wins

There are few aircraft that get more immediate attention than the iconic B-29.

After the restoration of ‘Doc” a few years ago, aviation fans have twice the opportunity to see one in flying shape as it joined CAF’s ‘FiFi’ on tours around North America... Doc will make a much-anticipated return to Oshkosh for the 50th anniversary of AirVenture. The Boeing B-29 Superfortress four-engine heavy bomber was built in 1944. Doc and FIFI are currently the only two flying aircraft of their type. On June 6th, 1944, Tom Rice arrived in Normandy, France via parachute at the beginning of the D-Day invasion. On June 5th, 2019, he did it again on the eve of the 75th anniversary of the event. Rice participated in a tandem jump from a C-47 transport, one of about 200 skydivers who reenacted the initial stage of the invasion. Now 97 years old, Rice said it went "perfect. I'd go up and do it all again." Rice was with the U.S. Army's 101st Airborne Division 75 years ago. He said on that jump, he got caught in the door as he exited the airplane, but he managed to free it and get out. At least one bullet tore through his canopy as he descended. World View has successfully executed a record-setting 16-day Stratollite mission. Prior to the completion of this mission, the longest duration Stratollite flight stood at just five days. This mission moves World View one step closer to scaled commercial operations of the Stratollite. On Monday, June 3rd, 2019, following the successful 16-day mission, World View personnel identified and navigated the system above a safe landing zone in a remote part of Nevada. All this -- and MORE in today's episode of Airborne!!!
