China Airlines Flight Goes Bowling For Baggage Carts

Snowy Conditions, Overshot Turn Leads to Ingested Baggage

A China Airlines 747-400F made a show out of its taxiing this week, as the Flight CI5240 appeared to cut a corner a little too wide, passing its left wing over and through a number of waiting baggage carts. The plane's engine number 1 sucked in a cart, and the left side of the aircraft was damaged. Engines 1 and 2, the gear door, and the engine cowling all came out the other side of the turn worse for wear. The Chicago O'Hare had received more than 3 inches of snow on the night of the incident, with some portions of Illinois seeing more than 10 inches total.

Robinson Helicopter Sees Improved Sales in 2021

Light Turbine R66 Outsells Smaller Piston R44 in Surprise Upset

2021 was a very good year to Robinson Helicopter, which saw a significant boost in aircraft sales. As the smoke clears and the industry moves into February, Robinson notes more than 450 confirmed orders, the highest the company has seen since 2011. The classic light helicopter manufacturer said that for the first time, its newer, R66 passed up Robinson’s long standing top seller, the R44 Raven II. F-15EX 'Missile Truck' Completes 1st Test

Eagle II Fighter Development Beats Missile Engagement Distance Records with AIM-120D

The U.S. Air Force has announced a milestone in the development of its new F-15EX Eagle II after a test aircraft fired an AIM-120D missile in a range over the Gulf of Mexico. The new Eagle II will replace the USAF's aging, increasingly tired F-15C and /Ds purchased through the decades. The new Eagle II has been referred to as a "missile truck", a concept that see the fighter carry ordnance into combat as a launch platform reliant upon stealthier, more advanced fighters like the F-35 Lightning II to penetrate hostile airspace and provide targeting guidance. The duo, if used correctly, leverages the increased payload of the Eagle with the advanced sensor suite

Academy of Model Aeronautics Launches Student Drone Sports League for Youth Learning

U.S. Drone Soccer has recently been recognized as an Academy of Model Aeronautics Special Interest Group. This SIG geared towards youth education and activity, beginning with the initial tournaments in Colorado, New York and Ohio. The league is hoped to bring youth into the world of aerospace, STEM, and model aeronautics. Drone Soccer is played by teams of equal size, from 3v3 to 5v5. Each match consists of a designated striker attempting to make their way through the opposing team's goal, with their fellow drones attempting to run interference and block their opponents in the full-contact drone sport. The small, lightweight, spherically-caged drones give stu

IFALPA, Euro Cockpit, Urge Caution Over Ukraine

Lessons Learned from 2014's Downing of MH17 Should Be Applied Today, Say Orgs

The International Federation of Air Line Pilots’ Associations (IFALPA) and the European Cockpit Association have expressed concern with the posturing occurring in Easter Europe, as tensions over Ukraine between Russia and NATO-aligned countries. The groups emphasized the similarity to the events of 2014 which saw the destruction of Malaysian Airlines Flight MH17. In their joint statement, they reiterated in short some of the pitfalls that led to the destruction of the civilian aircraft, described later on as the result of an unfortunate error chain that included sloppy intelligence, lack of misidentification awareness, and procedural shortcomings that was

From 2009: Wagstaff Explains the Importance of Sponsorship for the Air Show Industry

At the 2009 International Council of Air Shows Convention, ICAS President John Cudahy expressed optimism going into 2010. Despite the struggling economy, air show attendance increased throughout the 2009 season. Yet as the industry shows signs of thriving, performer sponsorship remains a vital aspect to the continuation of the air show community. Patty Wagstaff sat down with Aero-TV to explain the criticality of sponsorship and the difficulties many performers face within the industry.
