'Military Style' Helo Down On Central Florida Coast

Three Fatally Injured In The Accident

A helicopter described as an older "military-style" aircraft went down Tuesday in a largely-undeveloped area of Florida's Space Coast.

Florida Today reports that the aircraft, identified as a Sikorsky S-61N, was owned by a division of a global aviation support company and operated by AAR Airlift Group. It departed from Orlando Melbourne International Airport, according to the FAA. The aircraft did not appear to be in any distress before it went down, according to witnesses, and it was completely engulfed in flames when first responders arrived at the accident scene.

A Palm Bay Public Works employee told the Palm Bay Police Department that she had seen the aircraft hovering at about 500 feet when it appeared to descend a little, and then it suddenly fell to the ground and burst into flames.

The names of the three people on board have not been released.
