Israeli Air Force Intercepts Plane Over Nuke Site

Pilot Said He Had Gotten Lost

Two Israeli Air Force Fighter Jets were scrambled Tuesday to intercept a private plane that entered prohibited airspace over a nuclear facility in the southern Negev desert.

An army spokesman said the jets forced the private aircraft to land, the pilot and a passenger were handed over to local authorities.

The international news service AFP reports that, while Israeli police are still investigating the matter, the Israeli media is reporting that the pilot and his passenger say they had gotten off course, and did not intend to overfly the nuclear reactor.

The facility is officially used for research purposes, but some allege it is at the center of a secret nuclear warhead program in Israel. Aircraft are not permitted to fly over the reactor site near Dimona. Some defense analysts claim that the plant has produced some 200 nuclear warheads for Israel.
