Airports Happy About Growing Unleaded AvGas Availability

Two San Mateo County Facilities Receive Swift Fuels

San Mateo County announced that distribution of unleaded aviation gasoline at its airports is growing with the recent deliveries of Swift Fuels’ 100R and UL94 to San Carlos Airport (KSQL) and Half Moon Bay Airport (KHAF).

The San Carlos Flight Center and Rabbit Aviation Services received their first delivery of Swift’s 100R high octane avgas at San Carlos Airport. The flight training center has certified its fleet of Cessna 172s to run exclusively on 100R at SQL and HAF for several months. Certification in additional makes and models is expected after this initial period.

In 2016, the San Mateo Board of Supervisors in partnership with Rabbit Aviation began to offer Swift’s UL94 at San Carlos, the first in California to offer unleaded fuel for aviation. Since then, three flight schools at SQL have successfully certified their entire fleets to run exclusively on UL94.

Certification requires the purchase of a Supplemental Type Certificate (STC) and working with a mechanic to inspect and authorize each aircraft to use UL94. Many aircraft are eligible to use the fuel but not all. To help expand the availability and use of unleaded fuels, the County announced that UL94 will be made available for sale at Half Moon Bay in the coming weeks.

The aviation industry is eager to have approval of unleaded fuels for all general aviation aircraft, and the FAA has set a goal of 2030 to have such a certified fuel.
