One Dead, Two Still Missing In FL Cessna 195 Accident

One Survivor Listed In Good Condition

Crews continue to search off the coast of northeastern Florida for the pilot of a Cessna 195 Businessliner (file photo of type, below) that went down Sunday in rough seas one mile from St. Augustine, as well as his 16-year-old daughter. Another passenger died in the accident, but there was at least one survivor.

The FAA states the plane had departed Jacksonville earlier that afternoon, and was flying south over the Intracoastal Waterway heading to Fort Pierce when pilot Gary Tillman sent a 'mayday' call, saying he was having difficulty maintaining altitude.

The aircraft went down at approximately 1:30 pm, said Coast Guard Petty Officer Donnie Brzuska to the St. Augustine Record.

Tillman, 43, and his 16-year-old daughter Hanna were still missing Monday morning. Another passenger, Anna Kipp, was found near the scene but later died at a local hospital. Rachel Hestetler, 16, was found in the water and is listed in good condition, authorities said.

Rain and strong winds, combined with 7- to 10-foot seas, made the search difficult Sunday, said Brzuska. A Coast Guard cutter was called in to assist the effort, as a helicopter and small lifeboat could not maintain their positions at the accident site.

FAA and NTSB investigators were expected onscene Monday.
