FedEx Plane Slides Off O'Hare Runway

Winter Storm Blasts Midwest

A blast of winter weather may have contributed to an incident Friday morning at Chicago's O'Hare International Airport, as a FedEx plane departed the runway and got stuck in the mud.

The aircraft -- believed to be an Airbus A300 (file photo of type, above) -- got its nosegear and left maingear stuck off the only runway open at O'Hare at the time. The Associated Press reports crews were still working hours later to tow the plane to the cargo ramp.

A fierce winter storm has placed a virtual stranglehold on Midwest airports for the past two days. On Thursday, United Airlines canceled 385 flights at O'Hare ahead of the storm, to give passengers time to change their travel plans. American Airlines followed suit, and canceled all of its inbound and outbound flights from O'Hare.

The Chicago area may get as much as a foot of snow Friday as the storm passes.
