HeliExpo '05: Honeywell Building New Turboshaft Engine For Bell 407

HTS900 Incorporates New Compressor Technology and Dual Channel FADEC, Certification Expected by Mid-2006

As previously noted on ANN, Honeywell has been selected to provide its new HTS900 turboshaft engine for future integration for Bell's Model 407 helicopter.

The HTS900 incorporates and features new compressor technology for improved performance, producing more than 925 Shaft horsepower at Takeoff Power rating at sea level on a standard day. The engine is expected to deliver Specific Fuel Consumption levels of .54 lb per shaft horsepower or a 5% decrease from earlier Honeywell helicopter engines.

The HTS900 has successfully completed the first engine to test (FETT), with a production version dual-channel full authority digital engine control (FADEC), achieving all designed power specifications. The dual-channel FADEC will ease pilot workload, provide reduced support cost and simplify maintenance procedures.

"Our new engine includes a next generation impeller, offering state of the art aerodynamic efficiency and a rugged wide chord axial compressor for improved erosion resistance and tolerance to foreign object damage," said Barry Eccleston, Vice President, Propulsion, Honeywell Engines Systems & Service. "The engine utilizes a new cooled gas producer (GP) turbine and shroud assembly that will deliver increased power with extremely low fuel consumption, and have a minimum of 15,000 component cycle lives. This combination results in very low operating costs for our customers."

"Operators will be able to choose engine output shaft speeds from either a 6,317 RPM version or a 9,598 RPM version for either single and twin engine applications," said Bob Miller, Director, Honeywell Utility and Light Helicopter programs. "Honeywell's commitment to the helicopter industry is to continually upgrade and improve its turboshaft engines for all rotor wing applications. Our engine enhancements give operators improved performance, reliability and reduced maintenance costs."

The HTS900 is based on the LTS101 family of engines that are recognized for high reliability and low direct operating cost.
