Aviation Students To Get Scholarships At Aero Club Dinner Nov. 20

Two High School And Four College Students Will Recieve A Total Of $25,000

Six outstanding local high school and college students will receive scholarship grants from the Aero Club of Southern California at a dinner at the Flight Path Museum at LAX on Wednesday, November 20. In addition eight pilots will receive certificates from the National Aeronautic Association for setting new climb and speed records in paragliders, jet liners, private planes and warbirds.

The High School Students include Michael Cox, Coronado CA, who will receive a $2,500 Marsha Toy Memorial Scholarship. Michael is a graduate of Coronado High School. He has been accepted at UC Berkeley and will double major in astrophysics and physics. His goal is to be an astrophysicist and contribute to future scientific discoveries. Michael founded the physics club at his high school and became its president.

Rasmi Elasmar, Long Beach CA, will also receive a $2,500 Marsha Toy Memorial Scholarship. Rasmi is a graduate of Mayfair High School in Lakewood. His goal is to attend Columbia University, next to NASA's Goddard Institute for Space Studies. He has been a programmer at The Aerospace Corporation since November of last year working on GPS related tasks.

College Student honorees are Samantha Rawlins, Alhambra CA, who will receive the $5,000 William Schoneberger Scholarship. Samantha, 17 attends Cal Poly, San Louis Obispo as an aerospace engineering senior. She worked as a summer intern for NASA at Marshall in summer 2012 and at Langley in the summer of 2013. She has soloed and wants to earn her private pilot's license by her 18th birthday.

Alex Lemke, Fallbrook CA is the recipient of the $5,000 Jack Real Scholarship. Alex graduated from Wathen Aviation high school at Flabob, and now attends Embry Riddle Aeronautical University. He is a commercial pilot, instrument rated, multi-engine rated, and a certified flight instructor, airplane and instrument. He had 274 hours flight time as of July 11, 2013. His goal is to fly for a major airline and work his way into management.

Mose Jang, Los Angeles, CA, who will receive the $5,000 John Durant Scholarship. Mose is studying aviation maintenance at West Los Angeles College to get his AMP license. He then wants to attend a university to get his BS in Aviation Engineering and become an aviation engineer.

Alexander Wang, West Hills, CA, who will be awarded the $5,000 Aero Club Scholarship. Alexander attends UC Irvine. His goal is to study guidance, navigation and control of UAVs, and to earn a Ph.D in aerospace controls. He has designed a successful driverless car and was part of a team which won the VEX Robotics World Championship in 2009.

National Aeronautic Association Record Setters will also be recognized. NAA President Jonathan Gaffney will present Certificates to Western U.S. pilots who set recent speed and climb records.
