Be Careful If You Fly The Skies Of Abkhazia

Province Says It Will Shoot Down Unidentified Planes

The breakaway Georgian province of Ossetia has been in the news lately, after a series of attacks on Georgian military helicopters overflying its territory. But it's not the only former Soviet state warning unidentified aircraft to stay out... or else.

That province is called Abkhazia... and now, authorities there say they'll shoot to kill any aircraft that violates its airspace.

"If any aircraft violates the republic's airspace without notifying air traffic controlling services, weapons will be used to destroy them," said Abkhaz Defense Minister Sultan Sosnaliyev. "First measures will be taken to force them to land, but if the crew fails to comply, we will have to open fire at them."

That also goes for any aircraft that approaches what the minister calls a "vital" installation... or in any other way fails to follow established procedures.

"The Abkhaz armed forces will respond immediately if our air boundaries are violated," Sosnaliyev told Interfax Wednesday.

Consider yourself warned.
