Airborne 06.03.15: Sonex Tragedy, Falcon 5X Rollout, Indian Pilot Scandal

Also: Breitling Jet Team, Jack Pelton, NetJets New Leadership, Carpenter Avionics, Italian AirShow, Expensive Rescue, DHS Preclearance

ANN  regrets to report that Sonex Aircraft CEO Jeremy Monnett, has been confirmed as lost in the crash of N123SX, identified in records as a 2007 Sonex SA.

The other person onboard has yet to be officially identified and we will bring that info to you when able. Needless to say, this is a punch to the gut for the close-knit family of sportplane pilots and fans in Oshkosh and ANN sends it prayers and support to the Monnett family, everyone else at Sonex, and the extended family of Sonex builders and flyers all over the globe. Dassault Aviation lifted the veil yesterday on the highly anticipated Falcon 5X, which they say establishes a new benchmark in the large cabin, long range business aviation market -- and the fact that it looks REALLY cool doesn’t hurt at all. India is reportedly granting pilot certificates to people with less than an hour's training, according to court documents and interviews conducted with pilots, regulators, and others. It’s reported that in one case, an Indian national was given a subsidy by the Indian government worth the equivalent of $44,000 to learn to fly commercial jets. He said he has a certificate showing he has 360 hours of training, but it was issued after he had sat in the co-pilot's seat for about 35 minutes. All this... and MORE in today's episode of Airborne!!!
