Griffin Says Shuttle Is Ready, In Spite Of Safety Panel Report

NASA Administrator Michael Griffin Thursday announced the space shuttle Discovery is ready to fly on July 13th -- even though an advisory panel headed by two former astronauts found the space agency has yet to meet three of 15 safety recommendations laid out by the Columbia Accident Investigation Board.

"Based on a very thorough and very successful flight readiness review, we're currently go for launch of Discovery on July 13," Griffin told lawmakers in Washington Thursday. He was quoted by CNN. "We look like we're in pretty good shape.... Based on what I know now, we're ready to go."

As ANN reported on Wednesday, the safety task force led by astronauts Thomas Stafford and Richard Covey found remaining issues with NASA's effort to eliminate critical launch debris (like that which led to the demise of the shuttle Columbia on February 1st, 2003), hardening the shuttle against debris impact and development of ways to repair the orbiter's heat shield in orbit.

The panel did, however, endorse NASA's sanctuary plan, which calls for shuttle astronauts to find refuge aboard the International Space Station in the event of a crippling disaster aboard the orbiter.
