Air New Zealand Does That Tolkien Thing

Air New Zealand Debuts Newest Flying Billboard

Leading up to the December 17 U.S. release of New Line Cinema's The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, Air New Zealand, "Airline to Middle-earth," unveiled the third in their fleet of The Lord of the Rings-themed planes this week at LAX.

Featuring designs inspired by the third and final film in producer/director/co-writer Peter Jackson's trilogy, the Boeing 747-400 aircraft depicts Lake Wanaka looking towards the Matukituki Valley in New Zealand's South Island- a sweeping backdrop of tussock, lake and mountain, inset with the faces of cast members Viggo Mortensen (Aragorn) and Orlando Bloom (Legolas.)

Mortensen greeted Air New Zealand's The Return of the King-themed aircraft Monday, November 17 at Los Angeles International Airport. Other aircraft in the fleet include a Boeing 747-400 carrying the faces of Hobbits Frodo (Elijah Wood) and Sam Gamgee (Sean Astin) and a Boeing 767-300 featuring Aragorn (Viggo Mortensen) and Arwen (Liv Tyler).
