Illinois High School To Offer Private Pilot Ground School Program

Partnering With Lake In The Hills Airport In Algonquin, IL

A high school district in the greater Chicago area is partnering with Lake in the Hills Airport (3CK) to offer ground school to students.

High School District 155 in Algonquin, IL will offer the program that will prepare students to take the FAA's Private Pilot written exam. The course is designed to give high school students a foundation that could lead to a career in aviation.

School Superintendent Jonnie Thomas told the Northwest Herald newspaper that students interested in aviation can get a head start in high school, "allowing them to reduce costs in college."

airport Manager Mike Peranich said that it's critical to reach kids early given the predicted shortage of pilots. "They may make the decision earlier to fly," he said.

The course will also be of interest to students looking at other aviation careers.

It will be taught by a commercial pilot and FAA certified flight instructor from August through December at Crystal Lake South High School. The classes will be held on Monday evenings, and will cost $350.

Flight instruction is not included in the cost of the class.
