Pakistan CAA To Examine Pakistan International Airlines ATR Aircraft

Airline Grounds Fleet Of 10 ATR Airliners Pending 'Thorough Examination'

A week after a Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) ATR-42 airplane went down about 50 miles from Islamabad last week, and another suffered an engine fire Sunday just before takeoff, the airline has grounded its fleet of 10 ATR turboprop airliners pending "shakedown tests" conducted by the Pakistan Civil Aviation Authority.

The accident in the mountainous region of Chitral near Islamabad resulted in the fatal injury of all 47 people on board the aircraft, according to a report from Reuters. Officials said that airplane developed engine problems shortly before it went down.

Local media reports that the pilot of a PIA flight from Multan to Karachi aborted the takeoff Sunday after the left engine of the ATR-42 caught fire.

As a result of the two events, PIA issued a statement that it was grounding its fleet of 10 ATR aircraft "till they are cleared after thorough examination."
