F-35 Fleet Grounded Following Generator Failure

"A" Model Suffered Oil Leak, Double Generator Failure

The Pentagon has grounded the entire fleet of F-35 Lightning II Joint Strike Fighters after an "A" model developed an oil leak and suffered a double generator failure in flight last week.

The setback comes despite good progress reportedly being made in the flight testing of the 5th generation fighter. Pentagon officials said the program was moving along well in congressional testimony last week.

 The failure was aboard the aircraft designated AF-4. It landed safely at Edwards Air Force Base following the incident. Multiple media sources including Reuters report that the grounding was described as "routine" by Lockheed and Air Force officials. Lockheed spokesman John Kent said the issue was expected to be resolved "soon," but did not give any more specific timeline. He said the aircraft is designed with multiple redundancies to keep the aircraft safe in these types of situations.
