United Airlines Permanently Ends D.C.-Manchester Route

Currently On Hiatus, But Will Not Return In April As Planned

United Airlines has permanently suspended its Washington, D.C. to Manchester, U.K. route, citing poor financial performance.

Buying Business Travel reports that the airline had placed the route on hiatus for the winter season, planning to begin flying it again April 7.

But the airline has now cut the route from its schedule. "We have regretfully taken this decision because of the route’s poor financial performance,” United said in a statement. “We will contact customers with bookings for flights beyond those dates to provide refunds and re-accommodate where possible.  We apologize for any inconvenience caused."

A spokesman for Manchester Airport said expressed disappointment at the news, but stressed that the airline will continue to provide daily service between Manchester and Newark, NJ. The spokesman said that the airport serves more U.S. destinations that at any time in the past, including Boston, Houston and Los Angeles through two different carriers.

United cut its service between Belfast and New York last month, after the European Commission blocked funding that would have allowed them to continue to operate it.
