UAV Assists Texas National Guard In Rescue Effort

Venus, TX Couple Saved From Flood Waters Surrounding Their Home

Two Texas homeowners were rescued from rushing floodwaters thanks in part to a SAR effort that involved a UAV.

Tracy and Bill Kastel were rescued by a Texas National Guard Black Hawk Helicopter. The UAV was used to carry a rope to their home that had become an island amid rushing floodwaters that had risen overnight.

The rope was intended to serve as a guide for a liferaft to cross the water, but the current was too strong for such a rescue.

The home is built on a steel platform in a known floodplain, and the Kastel's told rescuers they were safe and could wait until the flood receded, according to television station WFAA. But the Black Hawk helicopter was dispatched, and a Guardsman dropped down to the house, lifting first Tracey and then Bill to the hovering aircraft.

The Kastels said they were thankful for the rescue. "It was an experience I hope to never have again," Bill said.
