Iraqi Air Force Back In The Sky

Start "Limited Operations" With Recon Flights

Almost a year and a half after the US-led invasion of Iraq, that country's air force is flying again.

The US military says Iraqi crews took to the air in a pair of Seabird SB7L-360 Seekers (file photo of type, above right) for what was described as "limited operations missions intended to protect infrastructure facilities and Iraq's borders."

The Seekers are the first two such aircraft in what officials say will eventually be a fleet of ten SB7L-360s, built as part of a cooperative agreement between Seabird Aircraft and Iraq's neighboring country, Jordan. Coalition forces, along with Jordan's air force, have been training 162 Iraqis to form the core of a new Iraq Air Force. It's the first step in rebuilding a service that was decimated by the first Gulf War and subsequent sanctions by the US and the UN.
