FAA Funds Two Grants to Develop Aviation Workforce

Funding Supports Aircraft Pilot and Maintenance Technician Education

The FAA is working to diversify and strengthen the aviation workforce by placing fresh funds in two key pools: Aircraft Pilots Workforce Development Grants and Aviation Maintenance Technical Workers Workforce Development Grants. These are designed to address workforce shortages and foster diversity in the field.

The Aircraft Pilots Workforce Development Grants target the recruitment and education of aspiring aircraft pilots and unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) operators. The goal of this program, established through the FAA Reauthorization Act of 2018 and extended through the FAA Reauthorization Act of 2024, is to attract a new generation of pilots and UAS operators by supporting educational initiatives, outreach, and military career transition programs.

The grants, which can reach up to $1 million per year, are available to various eligible organizations, including flight schools, accredited institutions, air carriers, and nonprofit organizations. Eligible projects include creating an aviation curriculum, establishing apprenticeship or scholarship programs, and conducting outreach efforts aimed at underrepresented populations.

The second round of funding, Aviation Maintenance Technical Workers Workforce Development Grants, is designed to bolster the aviation maintenance workforce. These grants focus on preparing students for careers as aviation maintenance technicians by supporting educational programs that provide hands-on training and outreach efforts.

Similar to the pilot grants, organizations like accredited institutions, repair stations, and aviation-related nonprofits can apply for these grants. They are also capped at $1 million per year and available for developing maintenance curriculum, establishing internship programs, and supporting military veterans transitioning into aviation maintenance roles.

The FAA’s goal with both of these initiatives is to address critical workforce gaps in aviation by creating a diverse pipeline of highly skilled professionals. The grants have been impactful, with over $13.5 million awarded in 2024 to more than 30 schools and organizations. Applications for both grant programs are open through February 5, 2025.
