World Games to Include Drone Racing

FPV Racing Joins the Roster of Lesser Known Sports For 2025 Chinese Games

The World Games 2025 schedule for drone racing has been published, with the big 32-man race scheduled to take part from August 14 to 16, 2025.

The races will be held at the Dong'an Lake Sports Park, in Chengdu, China, pitting 32 competitors through a ringer of FPV speed racing. The proposed schedule also adds a day prior to the competition start for model processing, so pilots have a chance to walk through the track, practice, and prep their gear after a long flight to China.

The Dong'an Sports Park Stadium holds one large stadium and a trio of outlying gyms, meant to evoke a Sun Bird and Flying Saucer from above. The location can seat 40,000 spectators in the main stands, with about 18,000 in one of the smaller gyms. The location has a number of large tourist attractions, too, understandable given China's enthusiasm for holding the games there. Visitors can drop by and ogle the pandas or get some shopping in while they mill between events.

The drone race schedule was just one of many events planned out for the event, announced as part of the World Game's 44th anniversary. The Games take place every 4 years, offering fans an 11-day event crossing a wide spectrum of athletics from around the world. For the 2022 Games, more than 3,600 athletes competed for 223 medaling events. Drones are a new addition to the lineup, only having been added in 2022. That makes 2025 a big year for them, possibly a sink-or-swim moment where the drone races have to really get some excitement going in order to get on the world's map of interesting events.
