Update: Typhoon Restaurant At Santa Monica Airport Closing

Says City Has Recently Tripled Its Rent

The 25-year run of the Typhoon Restaurant at Santa Monica Airport is coming to an end, but it is not an amicable closing.

The restaurant posted on its website that the City of Santa Monica has tripled its rent, and made business conditions "so difficult that it has been become impossible to carry on without incurring financial ruin.'

The final day for the restaurant will be election day, November 8th. "In view of the ways that this historic election-night may bring such radical changes to all of our lives that we may not even recognize ourselves the next morning, we have decided to live out these remaining days in celebratory style, with a month-long Typhoon “End of the World Party”.

The restaurant management says that in response to popular requests, we’re bringing back many favorite menu items. Bartenders will stand ready to conjure up any of the restaurant's world-famous exotic cocktails, along with many custom-recipes for special nights.

We’ve got a wide variety of great musical artists and events scheduled for October, into November.

After the restaurant closes, all of the iconic furniture, fixtures and equipment will be sold at auction, "with special consideration for long-time customers who want to keep a piece of Typhoon alive in their own homes."

Concerning the situation with the City, which is aggressively working to close the airport, the restaurant management said on the website that in Santa Monica, what might be considered deplorable in some places is "business as usual. It’s just too exhausting and disheartening to continue to throw good money after bad into this never ending shell-game of political brinksmanship."
