Florida International University To Hold Drone Disaster Management Workshop

Material Designed For Emergency Management Personnel And UAS Professionals

Florida International University in Miami, FL has opened registration for a workshop in UAS/Drone Management for Disaster Response to be held February 12-16.

Unmanned aircraft systems (UAS), commonly referred to as drones, are becoming more and more common in the national airspace system (NAS), and their use in emergency response is becoming invaluable to the agencies that utilize them. This 40-hour workshop will provide a framework for emergency responders, airspace managers and UAS operators to examine the challenges associated with deploying UAS and to demonstrate the advantage that they offer in disaster response and recovery. Workshop presentations will discuss the use of UAS in disaster response, recovery, preparedness, and mitigation.

FIU notes that this course is an advanced-level course designed for emergency management personnel and UAS professionals.  This is not a entry-level Part 107 test preparation course.

The presentations will also discuss the various types of UAS, as well as the current regulations on UAS.  Live demonstrations will be conducted to allow participants the opportunity to understand UAS safety and their value to responders and the civilian populations they protect.  The workshop will include two full days of scenario-based immersion problem solving to provide participants with decision making opportunities to enhance their knowledge. Participants will be assigned to small groups to solve Hurricane Irma scenarios using UAS and their integration into the Incident Command Structure.

A registration questionnaire will collect information on each participant’s level of experience and knowledge in his/her area of expertise.  This will enable the workshop planners to balance and optimize experience levels for each of the five table top exercise teams.  This will provide each participant with an opportunity to:

  • Contribute their expertise and experience
  • Team with other experts in UAS operations and emergency response
  • Develop UAS applications in realistic operational contexts

This workshop is taught by highly experienced, professional instructors with public safety experience and is a must for organizations and agencies seeking to use UAS technology to save lives and protect property. The target audience for the workshop is first responders, emergency management government officials (city, county, and state), airspace managers, airport managers, private/commercial pilots, UAS developers and UAS operators.
