TSA Investigates Reported Distress Calls

Were They Real?

The TSA is investigating a trio of reports of planes in trouble over Long Island Sound. The reports, which came in Sunday night, came in at roughly the same time, according to local news reports -- but none of them turned out to be true.

The callers, who reached the Coast Guard in New Haven, CT, provided tail numbers and details of either electrical or engine problems, according to the USCG. A third call came from a Connecticut state agency, asking if the Coast Guard had heard anything about a hijacking.

The Coast Guard issued an alert, but rescinded it some two hours later. The TSA will reportedly investigate the origin of the calls -- and the tail numbers, looking to find out if the planes actually exist and if they might have experienced trouble Sunday night.
