Vintage Bonanza Down In New Mexico

Investigators in New New Mexico are baffled by the wreckage of a 1947 BE-35 V-tail Bonanza -- they don't know if it was coming or going, much less why it went down.

Carlos Garcia, 67, of Belen (NM), appears to have been the only soul on board the aircraft when it impacted the desert floor Monday evening. Although the New Mexico State Police, FAA and NTSB are just beginning their investigation, officials on the scene say it looks like the aircraft had little or no fuel on board.

The debris field covers approximately 200 yards wide about a mile from the end of the runway at the Belen airport. Weather doesn't appear to have been a factor in the accident, according to officials in Belen. The aircraft was transiting from south to north when it went down. Federal investigators arrived on the scene late Monday night.
