Helicopter, UAV Nearly Collide In Australia

Crew Was Forced To Take Evasive Action

An emergency services helicopter and a UAV were involved in a near collision in Australia recently, according to media reports.

The helicopter belongs to Westpac, and it was returning from John Hunter Hospital in New South Wales about 2200 local time when the incident occurred. The Newcastle Herald newspaper reports that the UAV was at about 1,000 feet of altitude when it was noticed by the helo crew.

The helicopter pilot initially thought it was a larger aircraft that was further away, but it became evident that it was a small aircraft close to the helo. The crew was forced to "take evasive action" according to the report.

The incident will be investigated by the Australian Transport Safety Bureau.

Glen Ramplin, a spokesman for Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service, said there have been several UAVs operating in the area, but this one was unusually high. He said a collision between the UAV and the helo could have had disastrous consequences.
