Aero-News Alert: TBM Down In Jamaica

Pilot Had Been Unresponsive, Plane Overflew Cuba

A TBM-900 with the N number N900KN (shown, during our Aero-TV interviews at Lakeland in April, 2014) went down on the island of Jamaica this afternoon after overflying Cuba. NORAD F-15 fighters tracked the plane, and were unable to raise the pilot or anyone else on board.

CNN reports that the plane departed Rochester, NY this morning. Its intended destination was Naples, FL. A NORAD spokesman said that the F-15 pilots reported that the windows of the airplane were "frosted over" when it was observed at its FL250 cruising altitude.

FAA officials said the plane went NORDO about 1000 EDT. A Cuban fighter tracked the plane through Cuban airspace when the NORAD fighters broke off before entering Cuban airspace.

900KN had previously been assigned to a TMB-700 registered to New51LG LLC in Rochester, NY.

It was not known how many people were on board the 6 place airplane. Flight Aware reports the airplane went down in Jamaica at 1432 EDT. We will have more on the story as it develops.
