Airbus: 'Resilient' Cargo Market Will Drive Freighter Demand

Sees Particular Need For Aircraft In The A330-200F Category

The 2011-2030 Airbus Cargo Global Market Forecast foresees this sector continuing to demonstrate its resiliency to financial challenges and other worldwide pressures, generating an overall demand during the period for more than 2,700 jet freighter aircraft having cargo capacities of 22,000 pounds and above. Airbus believes the fundamentals for air freight traffic growth have not changed despite such influences as the economic downturn and pressure from higher fuel prices, leading to its expectation for a solid 5.1% average annual growth rate during the forecast period.

According to the 2011-2030 outlook, a key factor in air cargo trends will be the world’s emerging regions, requiring freighters with intercontinental range and payload lift capabilities from 30 to 80 tonnes.

The need for more than 800 new factory-built cargo aircraft is anticipated through 2030, with the largest market segment being mid-sized freighters in the category of Airbus’ A330-200F. To date, Airbus has sold A330-200Fs to 10 customers, with the most recent contract announced this month from Etihad Airways – which placed a repeat order for two more, bringing the airline’s total bookings to four aircraft.
