Aerial Photography By Drone Effectively Banned In Sweden

New Court Ruling Limits Flights To Crime Or Accident Prevention

The  Supreme Administrative Court in Sweden has placed strict limitations on the use of camera-equipped drones in the country, and that has a lot of people crying foul.

Engadget reports that the court ruled that drones equipped with cameras are surveillance devices, and can only be used with a special permit which limits them to crime and accident prevention.

The ruling runs contrary to other local laws. For instance, it is legal for people in Sweden to capture images in public places using the cameras on their cell phones, for instance, or any other camera for that matter. Some are questioning why a camera on a drone is any different. There is also no exception for electronic news gathering, according to the report.

But Engadget reports that enforcement may be an issue. County administrative boards are required to report violations to the police, and it would be difficult to prove if there is no evidence of the camera drone flight.

So we guess the moral of the story is don't post your drone video of your trip to Sweden on YouTube.
